Charles Stuart Daw (1950-03-16 – 2019-07-02) was born in Pensacola, Florida and attended the University of Florida, receiving his B.S. in Chemical Engineering in 1973. He then joined E.I. DuPont de Nemours at its New Johnsonville, Tennessee plant, working on fluidized bed reactors for titanium dioxide production before joining Oak Ridge National Laboratory in 1979. While at ORNL, he pursued graduate studies at the University of Tennessee, earning his Ph.D. in chemical engineering in 1985.

His seminal contributions to combustion research included modeling and control of deterministic cyclic variability in spark-ignited internal combustion engines, development of the FLAME DOCTOR coal-fired burner monitoring system, and his founding of the Cross-Cut Lean Exhaust Emissions Reduction Simulations (CLEERS) and the Consortium for Computational Physics and Chemistry (CCPC), both highly successful consortia within the Department of Energy which bridged academia and national laboratory research with strong industry involvement.

Stuart was a registered Professional Engineer in Tennessee. He was elected fellow of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers, the Cave Research Foundation, and the National Speleological Society.
