Papers describing current research on any aspect of combustion from fundamental chemical and physical processes to application are solicited. Fundamentals of micro-combustors, mesoscale combustion modeling and diagnostics, catalytic combustion as applied to fuel cells and fuel processing, and combustion control including artificial neural networks and genetic algorithms are of particular interest. The invited speakers and their subjects will be announced. A tour of the National Transportation Research Center at Oak Ridge National Lab is also planned.
The meeting will be held in Knoxville, Tennessee during the Dogwood Arts Festival, which is one of the largest spring festivals in America. This is the perfect time of year to enjoy the flowers and the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Meeting hosts are Prof. Ke Nguyen of The University of Tennessee and Dr. C. Stuart Daw of the Oak Ridge National Laboratory.
Submit papers for consideration by sending a half-page abstract by e-mail by 4 January 2002 to both persons listed below. The abstract should be in the e-mail text and not included as an attachment. Please include the address, phone and FAX numbers of the corresponding author on the top of the abstract. Authors will be notified of their selection by 11 January 2002. A 6-page PostScript file of each selected paper is due by 15 February 2002 and should also be sent by e-mail to cssci@nads-sc.uiowa.edu. Detailed paper format instructions are available from this file. The proceedings will be provided to meeting attendees as a CD-ROM.

Please indicate if a student will be presenting the paper. Students presenting papers which are in the proceedings (i.e., submitted on time) are eligible for a stipend. The stipend is $50 for local student presenters, and $200 for student presenters who are from a distance greater than 50 miles from Knoxville. Outstanding student presentation(s) will be recognized by the Central States Section at the Third Joint Meeting of the U.S. Sections of The Combustion Institute, which will be held on March 16-19, 2003 in Chicago, IL.
